Valuing
Social Justice in the Triple-Bottom
The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is a term that
helps define sustainability. It is the idea of
balancing the benefits to economic prosperity,
environmental integrity and social justice to
provide long-term benefits to our region. One
generally accepted definition of sustainability is
“the ability to meet the needs of the world today
and assure that future generations will have the
resources and ability to meet their needs.”
Many people struggle with how to incorporate
social justice into their sustainability plans.
Why is it difficult to include social justice in
our planning and why do so many people immediately
leap to environmental integrity or economic
prosperity when asked about their sustainability
initiatives?
WMSA Wins 2009 Midwest
