WMSA Partners

The mission of WMSA is to be a catalyst for collaboration. West Michigan has begun to establish a reputation for its collaborative culture.

WMSA is proud to be part of the development of that culture with the involvement of many regional partners in our various initiatives – the WIRED (Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development) Initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Green Infrastructure Initiative, Regional Indicators, Clean Cities, and numerous other efforts to improve the quality of life in West Michigan through creative collaboration.

This would not take place without the involvement of our many regional partners.

Literacy Center of West Michigan

In March 2010, the Walmart Foundation awarded a $550,000 grant to the West Michigan Strategic Alliance (WMSA) to fund an expansion of a pilot program for adult literacy. To help us achieve this goal, we have partnered with the Literacy Center of West Michigan.

The Literacy Center of West Michigan (LCWM) is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 that provides literacy services to over 1,000 adults in reading and English communication.  In addition to the Adult Tutoring Program, Literacy Center of West Michigan also serves area counties through the Customized Workplace English Program providing fee-based customized workplace English language, accent modification, and multicultural training to area companies; and the Family Literacy Program which offers literacy and ESL instruction, workshops, and family literacy events in partnership with the Grand Rapids Public Schools and Head Start.  LCWM is a United Way partner agency and a member of ProLiteracy America.

Literacy means more than being able to read; it’s about understanding and applying language correctly, enriching our lives at home, at work and in the community. For more than 20 years, the LCWM has developed proven programs that have helped thousands of adults learn to read and improve their English language skills.  Since 2001, their Customized Workplace English Program has helped more than 40 companies and organizations improve the English language skills of its employees.  And including a new Family Literacy Program is aimed at boosting literacy among at-risk individuals breaking the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy.

The Literacy Center of West Michigan is committed to helping West Michigan residents reach their literacy potential, opening the door to a lifetime of opportunity.  To learn more about the LCWM or get additional information, contact them at: 616-451-5959 or visit their website: www.literacycenterwm.org.
